I "might" be pregnant and I stopped smoking for the time being untill I found out for sure. My hubby and I, are trying real hard to concieve. It is too early for me to tell since we only tried the last couple of days. However, I did give up smoking (YAY) a week ago. I read somewhere you should avoid coffee while pregnant. Since it's too early for me to tell, can I still have my regular cup of coffee in the morning? Or should I give it up this early?

Have you wondered whether or not you can safely have caffeine during pregnancy? The answer may surprise you.
Not much was known about the effects of caffeine on the newborn 40-50 years ago. Today we know that caffeine is a stimulant and crosses the placenta and will reach the baby. There is some evidence that large amounts of caffeine intake can actually cause miscarriage in the first trimester or increase your chance of having a very small or "low birth weight" baby.

Experts agree that no more than 150mg of caffeine intake daily should be safe for most women.

Here is a list of popular drinks and foods with the approximate amount of caffeine included:

Double Expresso -160mg
Drip Coffee - 90mg
Soft Drinks - 45mg
Green tea - 30mg
Dark Chocolate - 30mg (1.45 oz bar)
Milk Chocolate - 11mg (1.55 oz bar)
Decaf Coffee - 5mg
Herbal tea - 0mg
Just remember that it is a cumulative affect, so if you have one cup of drip coffee in the morning, a soda for lunch and a piece of dark chocolate later in the day, your total caffeine intake for the day would be 175mg.

It is best to check with your own medical provider if you have any health issues that might be worsened by caffeine intake whether you are pregnant or not.

They say that what you eat and drink before you know will rarely do any damage. Think of it like this, many women are 4, 5, 6 or more weeks along when they find out and they end up delivering healthy babies. What you do from now on really counts. Stop smoking, drinking alcohol and try to avoid caffeine. Good luck and I hope you get good news soon. Yes, it is too early to tell. Wait until you are a few days late for your period.

From what I can determine from the web, there is NO DEFINATE proof that caffeine etc damages the child. Any road you having your morning coffee isnt going to do any damage, supposedly you should limit your intake, of caffeine, by cutting down on coke, coffee, even tea has caffeine in it.

I think the present feeling that we should avoid anything is a little bit too much of a nanny culture, i spoke to my gran and she said "in my day you ate what you felt like, and everything was great" so take what you want from that.

I understand your feeings of unease, as I am the same about coke, (not coffee), eggs, mayonnaise etc, there are so many do's and donts. Check on the web it will give you a list of things to eat and not to eat.

Good LUck

The experts say that you can now have one or two cups of coffee a day. They just want you to limit your caffeine.
Plus, it might be a little much for your system right now to be quitting smoking and caffeine at the same time.

A cup of coffee a day won't hurt anyone. In fact, the withdrawls from caffiene can be bad as well. Limit it to no more than 3 cups a day (that's the current recomendation). Best of luck to you. Moderation is key.

You can have up to 300mg of caffiene per day when pregnant. So just keep it under that. That's 2-3 cups of coffee normally.

just one cup wouldn't hurt even if you were pregnant for one day or 9 months...don't stress about getting pregnant someone told me i could actually make it harder to conceive and you should "do it" every 72 hours...my doc told use to try around the wee before your period. we tried for two years and i was stressing about it and just when i said if we're not pregnant by the first of the year i'm giving up...we conceived the end of october...good luck!!!

When your are trying to conceive it is best to start cleaning up the body.

If you know that there are things that you should be avoiding when you are pregnant then you should be doing them now to prepare for your conception then doing them after you have found out your pregnant.

A cup of coffee is fine. It's best to avoid it completely when pregnant, but a small amount is okay.
