Some people think that anime is animation created in Japan and some think it depends on the art style and some think it depends on who the animators are. I don't know what to believe so I'm asking to find out.

It's an anime a.k.a. animation.

It's a collaborated animated project between a North American studio, a Chinese studio, and a Korean studio.

It has the features of the popular style of a Japanese animation, though it has more the feel of a Korean animation.

I think that people rely the definition more on the style than on whom worked on it, if that's the case, then all anime are Disney's.

Under the strictest definition though, anime is an animation made primary for Japanese consumption.

Avatar is an American Cartoon, based on some Japanese anime influences and animated in Korea.

so is this Animation? Yes. is it Japanese Anime? No.

the creators of Avatar have mentioned that their show was influenced by miyazaki (howl's moving castle and spirited away) as well as some live action movies. but this is strickly an American creation that has some anime/live action influences. the best way to confirm this is to rent the DVD's at a video store and view the special features. the creators and animators give all this information for your benefit there.

so, to clarify some things... Anime is a Japanese Animation. the reason it's called "anime" is because at one time it was easier to say "anime" than "animation". while many cartoons today are influenced by that animation style (large eyes, small mouth drawings and the whole sweatdrop or angry "vein" thing on their head... or the "half moon, white eye, dark eyebrows denoting anger" thing), anime is strickly a japanese animation style and refereces animation created in japan.

Whether it's called anime or not, it definately has many of the same qualities. I started watching ATLA and soon enough was a full fledged anime fan. It's a matter of opinion. If you want to call it anime, call it anime. If you want to call it a cartoon, call it a cartoon. I think you are safe calling it American Anime. Either way, Avatar is a great show and it's totally out of character for Nick so if you haven't seen it I would highly recommend giving it the benefit of the doubt.

Anime (アニメ, Anime? IPA pronunciation: /ɑnime/ listen (help·info) in Japanese, but typically /ˈænɪˌme(ɪ)/ or /ˈænəˌme(ɪ)/ in English) is an abbreviation of the word "animation". Outside Japan, the term most popularly refers to animation originating in Japan. To the West, not all animation is considered anime; and anime is considered a subset of animation.

While some anime is hand drawn, computer assisted animation techniques have become quite common in recent years. Like any entertainment medium, the story lines represent most major genres of fiction. Anime is broadcast on television, distributed on media such as DVD and VHS, and included in computer and video games. Additionally, some are produced as full length motion pictures. Anime often draws influence from manga, light novels, and other cultures. Some anime storylines have been adapted into live action films and television series.

If it is, it shouldn't be. I mean no disrespect to the show itself -- I don't watch it, but from everything I've heard, it's a fine production. However, everything about the show -- the concept, the writing, the animation, the production, etc. is American, and for a show to count as anime, it really has to be made in Japan, at the very least. So no, it isn't anime, not technically, but that doesn't affect the quality of the show.

If you ask a Japanese person about it, he will thell you that "Avatar - The Last Airbender is indeed anime" but because Anime, in Japan, is a word used to refer to any cartoon.

The meaning of anime that we have outside Japan is quite diferent, and refers only to the animation that comes from Japan.

So, for us, is not anime, but could be consider "Anime quality" which doesn't mean that it is actually anime.
