The only way granite will explode in your fire is if it contains a large amount of water. If a rock is hydrous, then when heated, the water will turn to steam and try to escape. A good example of this is building a fire while camping and putting rocks in the fire that came out of a stream. Some of them will contain enough trapped water that they will actually explode. This generally happens with sedimentary rocks, such as sandstone and limestone. The crystal structure of granite is such that it will generally not hold enough water to create this kind of reaction.
The melting point of granite is around 3100 deg. F, not a temp. you are likely to get anywhere near, even with a bellows.

Granite can split as it cools (with a loud bang). Not really exploding but can be dangerous. I heard of this happening when a camping group built a bonfire at the base of a cliff. As the fire died down, a chunk of rock crashed onto the fire. irhink it was granite but it may have been limestone.
I'd be cautious anyway.

Granite is an igneous rock that has been formed from molten rock... it won't explode under a hog roast fire.

I don't think that granite explodes, since it normally does not have any traped air pockets inside
I doubt that your pit will get hot enough to melt rocks, either.

well if youre using wood and charcoal youll be fine... wood fires rarely exceed 800 degrees... ive seen granite glowing cherry red and then doused with cold water in an american indian sweat lodge.. they may crack along fissures, but it doesnt explode.
what you actually want is bassillica brick... they line furnaces with it, and make bricks for gas fires out of it...

hmm... too many "ats" in that sentence... :)
Granite is not a combustible material. It won't explode, unless you drill a hole and insert gunpowder in the middle of it, or something.
