Materialism is so stupid

Scotch Pine, I know what you're saying, I also like getting gifts, but my point there's TOO MUCH EMPHASIS ON IT. I don't expect gifts from friends and family, but I do appreciate it when they do give. I'm saying that too many people expect it and get "hurt" or angry because they feel they're entitled.

Because there is more emphasis on receiving rather than giving. When you watch a young child on Christmas, they are more concerned with what they got. As parents, we need to play up the giving part of holidays/birthdays. I love giving my boys presents, but I have to teach them to love giving as much as I do.

How do I do that?

Make children a very important part in giving presents. Let them pick something out for everyone. Do not go shopping for grandparents/siblings/aunts and uncles without the children. How are they to know the joy of giving, if all they get to do is receive?

We live in a material world .... and people "get so greedy" because they like things ...don't you?

First of all, I do not agree that materialism is so stupid. What is the matter? People are too cheap? You can set up an account in your bank just to squirrel away money so you can give gifts, etc ... A Christmas Club, a Rainy Day Club, a Vacation Club ... anything you want. You don't have to go around sniffing that materialism is so stupid just because you have run yourself short of cash and can't buy what you might like ...... and in addition, you can keep a look out for things that aren't very expensive but are nice to give as a gift ....

Second, I do not mind it if people are greedy on birthdays and Christmas as long as I can figure out what to GIVE them. I LOVE giving presents. I love wrapping them, I love all the little tags and cards, and the ribbon.... I love the whole schmear! Even if I don't have much money to spend, I still love it. And, (ta dah!), I love actually giving the gift itself, after I have had such fun with it. I love knowing that the person to whom I have given a gift is happy and pleased. I recently gave someone a coat... it was a very nice coat, short, black pure wool, with a lovely faux fur collar ..... she loved it, and it made her happy the whole day .... now: is materialism so stupid? IF IT MAKES SOMEONE HAPPY FOR THE WHOLE DAY? I think it is a miracle. And, I am happy to be part of anything like that.

Third, people need things and it is VERY nice to get gifts, Gifts from others can change your WHOLE personality, your whole outlook on life. Once my mother gave me something quite daring and I just loved it! I could not believe it. It changed me 4-ever!!!, bless her.

Why, why , WHY do people say materialism is so stupid? Maybe after a certain point it is .... maybe when people hoard or refuse to share the wealth ... maybe when they fail to give something that they could easily give ... but as a general principle ... no. If someone buys a rug, is that stupid? If the children need new clothes for the summer, is that materialistic ... and you plan to send them to a nudist camp for the summer? Please do be more thoughtful about accepting certain ideas that, quite frankly, are all wet.

I take it a December birthday? both the acceptable and worst month for a birthday, extraordinarily the in the route of Christmas you get. And pondering I in simple terms celebrated mine some days in the past i'm no longer and not using a clue to this. I continually loved as a baby having the tree up as I opened my birthday grants, yet as I were given older I discovered there have been too many circumstances my individuals would concentration on getting me some thing for Christmas and ignore about my birthday so that they ended up having for instance Christmas grants into birthday grants. a minimum of I were given some thing, others are not so fortunate and they don't actually have December birthdays. To be straightforward, i imagine see you later as you do not assume to get each thing off this record that it's not a nasty record. A favor record must be belongings you would pick to get yet do not assume you receives all of.

Both my sisters are like that. It's annoying. Since it is their birthday I just get them something and then they go away and don't bother me anymore. At Christmas, as I have 4 siblings, we each draw one sib's name and shop for just that person at a set price range. That simplifies the materialism and makes things even. I don't like to be fussed over too much, maybe it's because they are both Type A personalities.

Because we are conditioned to think that it's all about what you have and how much you spent for it. Or what it does, or what it's supposed to be good for. GIVING is always a word thrown around during these time periods, though it's completely outshined by "gimme, i want, mine/my day, give it to me!"
So, I agree, materialism is stupid, but we are surrounded by commercials (saying you need, must have, and it's only &&.99!), and people are very visual and sometimes easily convinced.

I agree. People tend to feel entitled. Instead of feeling grateful for any show love or regard, they estimate the value of the relationship based upon the gift.

Nothing wrong with being happy with getting a nice present for a holiday, but then again, the media has so saturated us with goods that no one remembers why they are celebrating.
