We also want to know about recreation. Are there places to camp in the summer? How hot does it get in the summer? And what neighborhoods are good to live in. We want an older house with a yard for the dog and plenty of parking for 2 vehicles, 1 5th wheel trailer and a couple of motorcycles. But we don't want to pay alot. Can't afford to til we get settled. Will have money from the sale of our home to get settled and put down on a house. Would buy a house if we find the right one. My husband works construction, has 30 plus years experience. Licensed Contractor. I have 30 plus years experience in Customer Service mostly Management. What are our chances of getting good jobs with good pay? We need to make at least 40K together. What are our chances of this? Lot's of questions, but, we want to be sure we are making the right decision. Thanks!!

If you want to have a large property, you are going to have to live in an older neighborhood probably closer to the strip. The newer homes are on the outskirts of town. I live in the northwest side and love it because it is higher than the city and cooler in the summer. It depends on how much money you plan on spending for a house. Prices continue to decline because they went up so high and will continue to decline for the next few years acording to the experts. Yes lots of good places to camp but probably not in the summer unless you go up in the mountains it is too hot. It should be no problem making 40k together that is not difficult at all. Lots of stuff on line. The main newspaper is the Reeves Journal and you can find them on line with everything you need. From about Sept till now, the weather is very nice not hot and is usually beautiful. It can get 30 or below some days but not usually. Very hot in the summer avg 100 plus and sometimes more during hotest period. It is a vibrant city with lots of activity.

Winters: mild. If it gets below 32 it's *cold*. Snow is rare and lasts, maybe, 1/2 day

Summers: very hot (it *is* the desert). You'll learn to tell the difference between 105, 110, and 115F real fast. 100 days in-a-row- of 100degreeF temperatures, falling to the mid-70's at night. You'll learn to live off of refrigerated (air conditioned) air.

Recreation:
Red rock state park: hiking, some camping.
Mt. Charleston state park: cooler than the city, hiking, camping. Lake Mead: not my idea of a tree-lined forest lake, but it will do in a pinch. Camping, boating.
Other recreational areas downstream from Hoover dam on the Colorado river are also nice.

Work: Every hotel/casino is *always* interested in customer service types. The town is still growing so there should be plenty of decent construction jobs available. You both should find great jobs right away with more pay than you mention.

Housing: This is the bad news. The city *is* growing, which means demand is very high, and housing prices are way up. Where to live is hard to answer in this little Yahoo answers box. Where not to live is easier -- anywhere within a 1 mile radius of downtown, nor anywhere within 1/2 mile of Las Vegas Blvd, nor most of (the town of) North Las Vegas (although there are exceptions).

The other downside: the city *is* growing, thus it has growing pains. The roads, water, sewers, etc. etc, are being stretched to the limits. Traffic is horrible. At least electricity is still pretty cheap (for your A/C in the summer).

Hello, Harley Girl. Glad to see you are going to take the big move to Las Vegas. I am sure you and your husband will love it here.

Now, lets get on to your questions:

1. Camping: Most people go to Reno/Tahoe to camp. Either there or Arizona. Lake Tahoe is nice.

2. Weather in the summer: Eeeeek! Usually over 100 degrees. A very, dry heat. A nice day is weather in the 90's.

3. Neighborhoods: Depends a lot on your budget. The BEST places to live are Summerlin, The Lakes, Henderson, and West Vegas. If you don't want to pay a lot I would suggest West Vegas. Check Craigslist.com for current real estate.

4. Jobs: Customer service and managment are big here. Mostly they are in call centers. The typical pay is anywhere from $25,000-$50,000 for that position. I am unfamiliar with construction pay rates BUT that industry is huge here. Vegas is constantly expanding. I know you have to join the union to be employed.

You will most def. make good money here. Thats what this city is famous for.

Good news, you should make 80k together,
bad news, the house and property you want will cost $350,000 in an older neighborhood.

Hot as hell in summer, over 100 for 90 days easy.
Lots of good camping in south Utah, much cooler there and lots of nice people.

a little advice, Las Vegas price of living isnt what it used to be, 40K a year isnt the most comfortable wage for 2 people in Vegas. A job working for tips in a hotel/casino will give one of you well over 40k. If you have 30plus years experience working in cust. service, go to dealing school, in a few weeks, you can be a dealer making decent tips at a "break in" casino....good luck
