I would strongly discourage walking alone in Johannesburg at night to any gender of any age. That would be ... eh ... irresponsible.

Depends where you walk. Some of the suburbs are reasonably safe.

In the centre of Johannesburg I would recommend that you wear your oldest torn clothes. Don't wear watch or any jewelry and don't carry a wallet. Cover yourself with dirt and mutter and mumble to yourself. It would help if you chewed some soap so that you could froth at the mouth.

I would not walk alone ANYWHERE in the Republic at night. Rules of Safety in SA:
1) Never Walk anwhere at night.
2) Never go to Johannesburg.
3) Lock you're car doors, close windows (hijacking in Jozi is HUGE, no kidding)
4) Never go out anywhere dodge.
5) Don't event think of visiting any township...

SA is great, and if you are aware crime should not play a factor, but Jozi is like the freakin Wild West, no kidding. Why? Rich people, especially in Jozi are super Rich there, while the poor are super Poor...

Whilst I can strongly advise ANYONE of any age not to walk alone at night, I will say: In the whole world! SA is dangerous and no-one would consider walking alone at night especially. I,m from Johannesburg, I am NOT rich and our crime is really not confined to JHB! I love my city, my country and hey!
I love life! So, I would not walk alone at night on the streets of ANY country! If you come to SA, just be sensible and safe.

It is better not to go anywhere by yourself , Always go out with friends . Do not wear jewellary or "name Brand" clothing as it will attract unessacarry attention to you. Try not to carry a wallet around either , put money in your inside pockets of clothes. Avoid dark areas where there are no lights, dont use your cell phone while walking around as this will add to the unessacerry attention you dont want. Be alert at all times of the day.

I would not recommend an armed battalion of soldiers to walk the streets of Joburg at night or during the day for that matter.

It is suicide to walk the streets of Johannesburg alone at night and the only person to whom I would make such a recommendation would be an ANC politician.

I think South Africans could market this as a hard core reality T.V. programme. Like a "Survivor" series with ballls.

In a quiet deep throaty voice: "Make it through the centre of Joburg alive...."
and: "Stave off muggings, gun shots, muti killings etc"
"Get to the other side alive and win......Residency to the country of your choice."

and as a twist contestants can volunteer to wear jewellery as well to qualify for extra mystery prizes....

What do you guys think?
