Before World War I, Germany's religion was divided much like it is today. The south, Bavaria and Württemberg were heavily Catholic, including the Saar region and parts of the Ruhr Valley. Most of the rest, with heavy concentration in Prussia and the north was heavily Lutheran and other Protestant.

Culturally, Prussian Imperial Militarism dominated at this time period, although in much of the south a more laid-back agrarian lifestyle dominated the culture.
