Give up your place to those who are prepared to. Heinlein said:
"Those who say violence never solves anything are wrong. It (violence) has solved more problems in history than all other factors combined. Those who do not believe in this simple truth have always paid for it with their lives and their freedom."
Sadly by going along with the above you become someone who can be controlled through fear.
To be serious, if you have to do it, do it, but try your best not to. Go vegan if you believe that strongly. Protest war and the death penalty. There are a lot of ways to feel helpless and one of them is to believe that just because you can't fix everything then you should do nothing.
(I would not recommend a B12 deficient diet due to the resulting dementia/insanity)

A philosopher of the 20th century (whose name escapes me) once said (about the 20th century lifestyle/society): "We are condemned to be free." I suppose that freedom also entails one's choices, decisions. Each person is defined by his/her choices.
To take a life, you must surely either be forced into it, or you simply choose it. Let's say you're a hunter on a safari, and you kill a lion. Would that make you a better or worse person than someone who has just killed someone for a loaf of bread because he has two children, a wife and lives in poverty? Yes, you may say that a lion's life is lesser than a man's, but death is death, no matter whose it is.

there is no alternative. life feeds on life. even going vegan doesn't stop it - we are still feeding on the life of vegetables, which have fed and grown on the plants and animals that have died to make our soil...
whay you can do is:
eat with awareness and respect for the life you are taking... do not take more than you need... don't eat anything you would not be prepared to kill yourself for your food... recognise yourself as one tiny part of the great chain of life... make sure you do something worthwhile, generous with your own life in return for the life you have taken... arrange to be buried in a cardboard box so that your life can be food for the plants and insects that come after you...
btw "Thou shalt not kill". a more accurate translation is "Thou shalt not commit murder" , just in case you were thinking of this :)

We are not taking life, just transferring energy. We are all part of a transcendental oneness.
(I am not advocating taking human life. Just to be clear-we are talking about animal and plant life, right?)
