If I were in jail, I'd actually prefer solitary. As long as I could have some books and writing materials, solitary would be a lot better than general population. I don't much care for being stabbed, beat, threatened or sexually assaulted by other men. I'd rather be alone, probably write a book about my thoughts and experiences and use it to make some money once I get out. But I guess most people aren't like me. Most people find prolonged solitude to be boring, torturous even. And most of the people in jail are not intellectually inclined, so spending their days alone, reading, writing and thinking wouldn't appeal t them much.
