I'm looking for music that emotes a mixed sad and happy feeling.
Like Beethovens Moonlight sonata, or the Dead Already song from American Beauty.

They dont have to be piano songs they can be with guitars or voices/singers anything as long as the mood is right.

I have a play list on my ipod called menalcholy. Some of them are all sad, but most are that mix that you spoke of (i've put a * by those). The songs are:

Learn to be Lonely - from the Phantom of the Opera movie soundtrack

The Steward of Gondor - Billy Boyd's solo from the Return of the King movie soundtrack

Febuary Song- Josh Groban (from Awake)

My December- the Josh Groban verson is more classical than the Linkin Park origional, but both are very good.

*Smile- Josh Groban (also from Awake)

*Remember- Josh Groban from the Troy movie soundtrack

Mi Mancherai (Il Postino)- Josh Groban (From Closer)

*Home to Stay- Josh Groban (From his self-titled album)

*You're Still You- Josh Groban (also from self-titled)

You are Loved- Josh Groban (from Awake)

The album "Eat, Sleep, Repeat" is like that all the way through. Definitely one of my top favorites.
Other than that...
"Attack" by 30 Seconds to Mars [self-empowerment]
"The Tide" by The Spill Canvas [about the pain of divorce and realizing in spite of it love is still real]
"Starting Over" by Audio Adrenaline [reclaiming lost innocence]
"Easy Lucky Free" by Bright Eyes
..more later..

bplumsers suggestion of "East Hastings" by Godspeed You Black Emperor is terrific (it's on their "F#~" album, which is quite an unbelievable piece of music). But beware - this music is at the truly apocalyptic end of the melancholic spectrum!

Try also material by Radiohead (OK Computer), Sigur Ros (Agaetis Byrjun) albums.
