The process differs state-to-state, but generally, if you buy from a licensed dealer, you pay for a criminal background check, and provided it comes back approved you pay for the firearm and take it home; there may or may not be a waiting period.
There is no registration required by the federal government for the vast majority of firearms and most states do not register any firearms.

It depends on what you're buying. For a rifle, the store will do a quick background check w/in 30 minutes or so while you're there. You'' fill out some paperwork (so the gun is registered to you) and it's yours.
For a handgun you will be required to wait for the three day period. Same criminal background check, and registration.

long gun: (shotgun, rifle, etc.)
easy, walk into gun store, pick out a gun, pay for it, walk out... I heard some banks in Michigan give you a rifle just for opening a bank account...
hand gun:
easy, but takes longer, depending on state... you might need to be 21, might have to wait up to a week, and might have to pass a background investigation...
Here are a couple links for more detailed information.

You can go to the want ads and get one, or you can go to a store where they are sold, fill out a background check, which takes about 30minutes, and if your not legally crazy or a felon you buy it.

It should be as simple as carrying it to the register, paying, and walking out of the store.
