Try Dequacaine (original) lozenges. They're a bit nasty but will ease it off a bit.
You can also give echinacea a try (herbal remedy). It is very effective in the early twinge stage. You may find it stops it in it's tracks like magic. Try it anyway, you never know. Just read the label. I think anyone can take it without problems though.
Sore throats are caused by loads of different things though but I've only ever had sucess with the above.

Cinnamon is regarded as an effective remedy for a sore throat resulting from a cold. One teaspoon of coarsely powdered cinnamon, boiled in a glass of water with a pinch of pepper powder, and two teaspoons of honey can be taken as a medicine in the treatment of this condition. Two or three drops of cinnamon oil, mixed with a teaspoon of honey, also give immense relief

Sage is very good. You can drink it as tee, with honey if you choose or put the hot tea in a bowl breath in its vapors with a towel over your head. Take care not to burn yourself.

Gargling with salt water or Sterisol mouthwash.
Drinking hot water with cider vinegar and honey.
Chewable Vitamin C tablets.

tadditional honey and lemon juice with cooled bolied water.
Tastes delicious and is a natural anesthetic for the throat.

Gargle with hot salty water.... tastes pretty crappy, but makes you feel better. Then get some bedrest and wake up a new person!

Forget about antiseptic lozengers and the like. I always get relief by sucking mint imperials.

There are sweets like lockets and cough syrup removal of children can be helpful as you don`t want to shout
