Yeah, it's as safe as taking any other vitamin, and shouldn't interact with your birth control pills. If you compare the ingredient lists on the back of a typical multivitamin to one on a prenatal vitamin, you'll see that a prenatal vitamin has all the same stuff, just slightly more of it. Some people do not react well to vitamins (I personally can't take a multivitamin with iron), but it's not a function of pregnancy.

Doctors routinely prescribe prenatal vitamins for women who are hoping to become pregnant but aren't yet, so the presence or lack therof of a fetus in your uterus is not the deciding factor.

I would ask at the chemist what is in the prenatal vitamins that can improve your hair and nails etc. I dont think they would affect your pills but i am wondering if it would be cheaper this way. Usually as soon as a drug company put pre natal or whatever on a bottle of tablets the price goes up! You are paying for other supplements you dont need and ones that are designed for pregnant ladies x

You probably could, but I'm not sure that that's the healthiest thing to do.
Prenatal vitamins are designed to replace what the baby takes from you when you are pregnant. They are a very high dosage of what you might find over the counter. Since you are not pregnant, the extra vitamins will have nowhere in your body to absorb, which may lead to vitamin deposits in various places in your body. That could create other health problems for you.
I would talk to your doctor about a good mulitvitamin for women that you can take instead.

You can take prenatal vitamins but why not just take a good multivitamin that is well absorbed by your body and a folate supplement?

You really need to call a pharmicist. They are trained in that area and know what works with what.
