Tough question, we all have a accountability for our actions, If you have a diagnosis and are aware that if you come off your medication and commit an offence, then perhaps you should be held accountable for that action, but is it not more complicated than that, I mean if you are mentally ill can you be considered well enough to make the decision to come off meds in the first place?........... but then are we not allowed the freedom to make our own choices, i think there is an excising argument going on about this among the medical profession, should the law be allowed to intervene when people don't medicate, and should they be forced to take meds or be institutionalized. Maybe has to be thought about for each individual case?

It depends upon the degree of their illness, if not being on medication results in psychosis or delusion then no they are not responsible. They will still be held to some level of accountability wheteher it is mandatory adherance to a treatment program or court ordfered to maintain treatment. However a formal punishment my not be given.

i think so. well maybe. im mentally ill. i have bipolar disorder type 2, severe depression, anxiety disorder, and an over active mind just to scratch the surface. i dont take my meds bc i cant afford to go to a psychiatrist to get re-evaluated and get a perscription. i think im fully accountable for my actions. so when i feel like im on my threshold. like im gonna snap at the next thing that pisses me off, i just stay home for a while. i can only call in sick three days in a row, so i try to time it with the weekend. im afraid i might hurt someone. no one at work cares though so i just say ive caught the flu when i call in. i dont like to lie but its for their own good. i work at walmart by the way, not that its relevent, but if you could imagine being a slave monkey in a grocery store all day.

Everyone is accountable for their actions anytime. If they're mentally ill, they may get lucky enough to be found not guilty on an insanity plea though.

yes. I have a hard time with compasionate people making excused for this. I don't think I am cold hearted but if a person commits a crime or whatever, they are responsible not medication or a doctor or the neighbor or friend. Suppose this is one test down here

Your question is too vague and accountability would depend on so many things: degree and type of mental illness; what actions they took...and do you mean criminally liable, civilly liable?

No,
they will however likely be forced back on them if they fail to obey the law,
Funny how law is skewed towards evil these days.
