I saw a commercial last night advertising the "Black Pages." It's a phone book like the yellow pages, just with African American owned businesses. How can that be allowed? If there was a phone book with just white owned business it would never have happened because everyone would have called it RACIST!

I think that its stupid to have a black pages...and im black.. i think its wrong to let black ppl do certain stuff but if a white person does it its rasist....so i think its stupid!

Please continue to be angry, because there is a Jewish Yellow Pages, Asian Yellow Pages and Hispanic Yellow Pages, yet you seem to just harp on the fact that there is a Black Pages out there in the world. Well La-Di-Da*n-Da. Like someone said, it's marketing to a niche and trying to grow your business the best way you know how. That's just good business. Most businesses in the conventional White Pages (wow, no one is making a fuss over that) are white owned. The thing is, while minorities will buy from a white owned business (and have no problems doing so. Why should they?), most whites will not buy from a minority owned business, so a minority marketed ethnic phone book is one route to go through in order to drum up more business. All of the things going on in this world and you're b*tching and moaning about a da*n phone directory. Please direct your anger towards something useful.

I see your point, I wish I had a good answer for it. I think it should be looked at and dealt with, there are other cultures in this country that have had a rough past. The Latin people in this country have a slavery past and only ask for a opportunity to work, and the Jewish community that came here had faced genocide just 60 years ago. I don't think they want racism to end, I think they see it as a advantage, the more White's try to eliminate racism the more barriers they put up. Look at the black comedians, they can't make a joke unless it's at the expense of another race, and yet we condone it. Why?, because it's easier to ignore.

David M got it right. Only if they don't let whites get the phone book, it would be racist.
I'm white and the Black pages doesn't bother me. Black owned businesses need to put themselves out there in some way. I like it.

It is not racist, it is called "Targeted/Niche Marketing".
If I started a book with only Caribbean-owned businesses in the US listed, the Caribbean people in the US would welcome it because it makes it EASIER to find certain things or to SUPPORT those businesses over others.
I am sure that the businesses listed in the book are ALSO listed in the "Yellow Pages" (that is a brand mind you, like Xerox) and other phone books - they are not trying to exclude themselves from society.
If they tried to excluve WHITE people from getting the book, now that would be racist. The regular phone book already is a WHITE business listing since the majority by far are white-owned companies and even the book generates profit for whte-owned companies (Verizon et al).
There is nothing wrong with a minority creating a book for their own group, much less another group, that is just smart business sense.
Next we are going to have a problem with a phonebook in Spanish that somebody comes up with. This is CAPITALISM at work.

Just another example of reverse racism, they probably had to look real long and hard in the WHITE pages to find the Black businesses, that they came up with something easier, i bet the book is a real THIN one.

That's because black people are a minority that's poorer--they need all the help they can get to get to the same level as the rest of Americans (as a whole).
White people, on the other hand, are the majority and the richest, so a "White Pages" would only serve to reinforce their economic supremacy.
I understand what you're angry about but you have to look a *little* below the surface.

Just sounds like a stupid idea that won't work out to me. So don't freak out about it. It's just a phone book. It can't hurt anyone unless u carry it around hitting people with it.

Racism will stay alive as long as every minority can use it and abuse it. Reverse racism is the cause of racism. I do not care about what anyone looks like, but I do care about how well they work,,, and being forced to hire someone that is sub-standard only hurts racist feelings more. Just an opinion.

Because only white people could ever be racist, which is a racist statement itself. At least that's the perception in our society that is perpetuated by most teachers and the media. Be careful when challenging things like this because if you do you will be labeled a racist because you aren't letting people do racist things. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it?
