I don't think cussing is ladylike or even manly. People who use swearing to express themselves would likely not develop the vocabulary to draw on that non-swearing folks do.
If 'sh*t' covers every emotion from anger to frustration and then some, it becomes less necessary to expand your methods of self expression.
In my opinion...
Live well~

I feel that there are better ways to express one's ideas than using expletives. It isn't flattering when anyone does. However, did your mother ever say it's wrong for men to cuss, too? It seems to me that you were raised in a very sexist environment. I'm not trying to insult you. Most people were raised to believe that the things men can do are not acceptable for women. It is sad that so many of us have had to suffer social restrictions just because we're women.
I have read some of your answers to other questions, and it is clear that you have had a Christian upbringing. However, let me point out that there is a difference between being Christian and being Christlike. If a woman curses in your presence, is it your place to correct her? Not really. However, if you must correct her, correct the men that do, too.

I was also raised with the knowledge that a lady did not cuss and I did very well until I became grown and got out into the workforce, there are many a$$holes that you have to unleash a good cussing out on. So in my later years, I do not cuss on a regular basis, but piss me off and you would think I did a skit in the Navy or was a truck driver. I know when and where and how to cuss, when necessary.

What makes me not appreciate a woman's cussing is not a matter of my preconceived ideas of what is ladylike or not. It's just that I tend to take things literally, so the meaning of the cuss words seems quite out of context. For example:
Why should an obnoxious bird in the morning be "condemned" by God? It has no soul; it's just doing what God programmed it to do.
"You want me to do WHAT to myself? That's anatomically impossible!"
See what I'm saying. People who cuss use words haphazardly without purpose. That's more of a turn-off to me because such people seem to lack self-control of their tongue or mind.

Sure, it may not be a "big deal" nowadays, but I'm sure anybody here would have more respect for somebody that didn't use foul language as opposed to somebody that did. Expression is important; furthermore, slurs can be offensive. I guarantee that the people who say it's "OK" surely wouldn't agree with use of certain words, especially a four-letter word used to refer to female genitalia. Swearing simply isn't ideal, quite plainly.

Using a curse as every other word is downright unacceptable. Cursing when the situation calls for it, ie. stubbing your toe really good and flinging off a "son of a b..." is perfectly fine, perhaps even humourous.
I've worked with some more "colourfully" verbose women, and it gets to the point you just look at them with that "wow... I'm embarassed for you..." stare.

I wonder if they're happy.
I do enjoy watching Hockey in dive bars where they women are fowl mouthed; I used to do this with my Dad for the shock value (giggle). I wouldn't want to keep myself in this social state longer than a hockey game though.

I'm with you mum all the way and also the most disgusting thing is when a woman gets drunk and starts acting rude.

I think that if men can, women can as well. I think there is a time and place for everything, but in some situations, it is perfectly fine!!
And for all of you who say that profane people are less educated and more ignorant....You are showing your ignorance with those statements. I have a Master's degree, and I use curse words when I feel the need. You do not have to use an expansive vocabulary all the time to prove that you are intelligent!!

I am 21 and like to think of myself as ladylike! ;-) I tend to swear because I pick it up from collegues at work and general lfestyles.
I don't think it makes you less of a lady, but agree that it isn't the best language to use in certain situations ie. visiting your mum!
