i've been applying for over a year now yet no return calls from prospective employers.

You may also want to look at your resume / cover letter.

I know it may seem as though previous employers have been saying bad things about you, but maybe it's because your resume hasn't been well received.

Have you tried calling these prospective employers and asking them if they've received your resume?

They normally don't check references (I never put any on my resume so that way I get a confirmation that they've gotten my resume and are interested in me), until they're getting serious about hiring you, or have extended an offer to you.

I'd strongly suggest getting someone to look over your resume and the way you're presenting yourself.

sounds like something bad happened at the last one.? You must be looking for something very specific? What part of the country and what type of work? If you are seriously looking... no possibilities in a year? Your employer could tell a one sided story. You could call your emplyoer and ask him what he tells people as a reference.
