Yes, many pet stores sell slate but it is fairly expensive. There is no problem with natural slate found in nature. Just be sure when you clean the slate you do not use any chemicals or soap. Just use scolding hot water, maybe even soak it in hot water for about a day prior to adding it to your aquarium.

Slate is good, but I would leave it in a tank or bucket of clear water for a few weeks first - then any contact dirt/chemicals will be removed prior to putting it in with your catfish

Yes slate is fine, what i would do is get an old pan and boil it for 20 mins, this should make sure its clean and sterilized.

I have used it before without any problems but I did scrub mine with a salt paste and then rinsed it thoroughly and even boiled it in a big pot, let it cool and then air dry, prior to introducing it into the aquarium

Sure. Just be sure it's nice and clean first. If you have angelfish, they'll adhere their eggs to slate when spawning.

I wouldn't recommend it.
It could be contaminated with chemicals harmful to the fish (such as pesticide or fertiliser)
It's better to buy rocks for your fish tank from a pet shop, less of a risk
