I'd say you are already in labor if you are having painless contractions..if you know they are really contractions. You should definitely ask your OB/GYN NOT the hospital ER unless that's the only place you can reach your doctor. They can speed up the process at the hospital if you are thinned out & dialating but you want to definitely be with your doctor for that. Once I got to the hospital I had my son in 6 hours so be careful if you are not in pain but thinning out & dialating as was I. I called the hospital when the cramps started coming at regualr but very few & far between intervals...2 days before my son was born. They told me not to show up until I was in agony. I never hurt..didn't even want the epidural so...if I had taken their advice my son would have been born at home and probably with brain damage..the cord was wrapped tightly around his neck; they had to "suck him out". Luckily everything worked out okay and I have a beautiful, healthy son. I hope everything goes well for you & your child as well.

It could be until your due date.

I was 70% effaced and dialated to 4 and still didn't go into labor. I wasn't having contractions enought to send me into real labor...just those braxton and hicks ones that obviously made me dialate but not send me into labor.

My dr said it could be weeks...and it was about two weeks before i went into the hospital...

How far along are you? I would say you still have a ways to go unless you are like 39 weeks then it might be anytime...other wise...weeks

With my first i was thinned out 80% and only 1cm dilated. two L&d visits sent me back home and 3 days later I went into labor, but still wasn't dilated that much. I didn't have painful contractions though in my stomach, I felt the pain in my thighs.

They ended up giving me pitcoin after they broke my water. (I dont recommend it, its like gtting slammed by a truck). 4 to 5 hours later my daughter was here.

If you are getting low back aches or any kind of severe pain with the contractions I'd call.
I started experiencing this a few weeks ago. (I'm pregnant with number 2) turns out it was preterm labor.(75% effaced, but not dilated)
better to call and make sure.

I was dialated to 2cm for a few weeks, so it could take a while. Sorry good luck
