need wi-fi security for dummies. Have a cable modem and a Linksys wireless (g) router, set at default. To set up WEP or WPA network security do I need to change the configuration page or let Windows XP OS run a Set-up wizard or both? Do you know of a step by step web site for tech challanged people?

You first use the router configuration utility to setup WPA (WEP is easily crackable Don't use it) Use the wireless network setup wizard to enter your pass key (or utility that comes with the WiFi card for non XP Windows operating systems.)

i have a linksys wireless router, and i called them because the linksys was suppose to be a 5 minute setup, however it kept getting hung up during the process.

so calling them will help set up WEP or WPA security, and i recommend you also set up MAC filter. mac filter bases the security off of your computer's mac address (which is specific to your computer). again, linksys people can help you find the mac address for a pc, or just google "mac address for pc" so that you can have that ready when you call.

the reason i don't recommend finding info online is because i went to linksys forums, and everyone had the same problems set up wise, and so everyone had their own solution. just call them, get it done and right the first time.

You will definately need to go to your routers' config page and click wireless, and then click the tab below that says wireless security. Choose your settings and then in windows wireless config match the settings you chose in your routers config page. and tada you're secure and wireless!
