Don't forget that they can officially no longer be called "blackboards" because of all the stupid bloody do-gooders deciding on everybody else's behalf that it is not "politically correct" ! ! !

Anything can be painted with special blackboard paint. You get the paint in DIY shops and can paint just a piece of wood or a section of say a child's bedroom wall with it and use it as a blackboard to write with chalk on. Some people paint a kitchen cabinet door with it to use as things to do board.

Blackboards were originally made of slate but many boards are now made of porcelaine with a magnacite writing surface. Under the porcelaine is usually steel or aluminum.
Slate is a fine-grained, foliated metamorphic rock that develops from shale and tends to break into thin, flat sheets. For more information on slate go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slate
For information on porcelaine go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slate
For information on magnacite (magnesium oxide, or MgO) go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnesium_oxide.
Hope this helps.
