Under the doctrine of absolute pre-determination, society cannot hold us responsible if we decide to get drunk and our actions result in an automobile accident. Such incidents would have been part of a chain of causality that originated with the beginning of the universe. If we have no Free Will, there can be no responsibility and no punishments. Society could not exist.
The speculation that we have no free will defies common sense and our everyday experience of life. With the intervention of free will, our future, and thus the future of the universe, will follow a path different from the path it would have pursued without our intervention.
In addition to scientific considerations, common sense insists that Free Will exists. Who would deny that we have Free Will when we put one foot in front of the other and decide, of our own volition, of our own Free Will, to go for a walk or not go for a walk this afternoon? It is clearly irrational to believe that a chain of causality (pre-determination) at the time of the Big Bang determines if we go for a walk this afternoon, or not.

I don’t believe that all events are pre-determined. Pre-determined by whom? Who would be the orchestrator? “God”? That sure makes life seem pointless if all events are pre-determined and we’re just written into part of a script that we can’t maneuver our way through by free choice. The only other orchestrator would be ourselves - before incarnation. But why – why would we want all life events pre-determined and limit our creativity and experiences?
On the other hand, I don’t believe life to be a totally spontaneous experience, like a leaf blowing in the wind from here to there without a plan. More likely, we may have set up a few pre-determined challenges for ourselves, with open-ended responses, giving our lives creative opportunities.

Life as a way of making stuff happens that feels like destiny. I met the person I loved the most (note the past tense...) when I was about 3 or 4, and I would not see her again until I was 18 and ready to fall in love. My best friend, his girlfriend and me were in the same building during a competition when we were all about 12 years before we actually became friend. Sometimes, this feels like destiny, but its mostly random occurences.

Do you believe that this Universe moves based on a set of rules that never gets overruled.... rules that can have no exception at all? If so, there is then a perfectly logical case to believe that every event that takes place is part of a grand 'cause & effect' chain which was brought into being by the Big Bang..... thus in a way pre-determined by the Big Bang.
Just an idea... not that I would put my bet on that!!

It alot depends on the culture and religion you grow up in. Some people believe in fate. Whatever choices we make, it do seems that we are master of our destiny which is pretty true in some sense. For example, if you go to this person A house party, you may meet a person B who maybe a good or bad significant effect in your life. But, do you wonder sometimes, why do A person died in this tragic manner?e.g. in accidents etc.. and B person died peacefully? This is explain in the cause effect ~karma which is explained in some religion teachings.

Your destiny will be determined by how you lived your lives in the past. The people who are with you now, and the people that you will meet in the future were used to be part of one or your many past lives. If you still have things to settle/clear with them, and it's not done at this life time - expect to meet them or be with them again the next. I think it's a little of both. Our choices decided our fate. I think that it's possible there are different "life tracks" each person has and decisions the make along the way determine the ultimate outcome, thus determining their life as a whole.

There is not sufficient evidance to decide that life events are pre-determined. Sometimes it looks like everything in life happens according to a pre-planned agenda. But if that is so, everybody's life should be perfectly predictable.

so you think it is all predetermined? then just sit back and let it all happen...destiny...I would seperate the two and say that mayber certain people you are supposed to meet but you could mess it up. It may be destiny to meet or do whatever but the circumstances aren't predetermined.

If things are predetermined, then it doesn't matter what choices you make, you will still encounter the same situations (including people).
I'm not so sure things are absolutely predetermined. But I do believe that determinism is how things work and that supposed "free will" does not exist.
