1. Southern colonies had a greater concentration of slaves. While there WERE slaves everywhere in America the South's economy based on plantations demanded a much higher concentration of slaves than did the North's industry-based economy.

2. The North began to adopt education more than the South did. It is for that reason that Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania, Brown, and other prestiguous universities were established in the north rather than in the south. Additionally, it was in the North that the revolution had its greatest adherents--they were the best read and the most astute students of political history and political science

3. The North was much closely tied to Europe through shipping and trade. For that reason tariffs will become very popular in the North and every UN-popular in the South.
