how do they know? what goes on inside them that tells them their time is short?

Some people can feel their death coming for them. Our deaths are always there but at times they are closer than others. Some people are more aware of this than others.

Did those people said those things? Did they die or are still living?
Many of us afraid of dying and think it is going to be soon, like me for many years and I am still living. Don't think about those things.
