Your grow bulb can be used in any lamp which can take both the wattage AND the heat. Grow lamps usualy put out a lot of heat, so check the rating on the lamp before you use it.

You can use fluorescent lamps but you need to have them low to the plants - less than 6" in most cases. High pressure sodium can be placed farther away but they're relatively expensive. We use both in our greenhouse - fluorescents to start seedlings and HPS after that.

no, the lamp isn't the key, it's the bulb's angstroms that are. plants respond better to the right wavelengths put out by the bulb.

Wally World (wal-mart) sells 'em for 8 bucks fixture and all,, and yea any fixture will work but the covers (plastic screens) reduces output,,, or so i've read,, spud pretty much nailed the types

Use fluorescent or "compact fluorescent" lights. They are much less likely to "cook" your plants, and they use much less energy.
