I am 5 weeks along and our basement is being painted. Although I am not the one painting, I am a little concerned. My doctor said that it would not be a problem as long as I stayed upstairs, but I can smell it even up there. I opened the windows for a short time, but it's winter, so I can only do that for so long. Is it ok that I'm in the house while they're painting??

Latex paint or acrylic yes. Oil based? You should find somewhere else to hang out while it is being applied and is drying. Not only is it not good for the baby but it can and will give you a horrible headache. As long as it is not oil based there is nothing to worry about.

At 5 weeks you technically are okay, the baby doesnt share your body yet until the placenta is developed and functional at around 8-10 weeks.

But the first trimester is when you want to avoid as much as possible. Generally the fumes from regular non acrilic latex paint are not very harmful, but all others are very fumey.

I'd just spend as much time outside the house as possible if it were me.

If it helps, I painted a few rooms by myself when I was about as pregnant as you are. I was a good 6-7 weeks before I even found out I was pregnant. My baby is more than fine, he's developmentally advanced, so it surely didnt effect him. I also painted his bedroom when I was about 24 weeks.

I'm like sunshine and am a worrier. I would suggest just staying at a friends or family's house for the night and let it air out! That way you wont stress yourself out about it. Even when you aren't pregnant paint fumes make a lot of people not feel good. Exspecially if you sleep with the fumes because you are around them for such a long period of time. Hope this helps :)

Wear a white mouth-mask from the doctors...you can buy them at a hardware store. it blocks out the smell.
