It's your conscience talking to your subconscience, so to speak.

-First off, you have to relax. Sometimes the slightest bit of excitment can be enough to wake you.
-Next, learn to tell yourself often during your day or at least when you're going to sleep that you will know it's a dream or whatever you come up with. It's helps to get it in your head.
-Then, if you're still dreaming and lucid, try to concentrate on your hands. This will intensify the lucid dream. There's other things like spinning around like a top, but your dream scene might change resulting in turning into a normal dream.
-Also, in order to control your dream, you have to "know" it's going to happen and make it happen. If you want a purple, furry alligator to fly around on, you might need to clearly tell yourself that this is a dream and your going to fly such a thing. You have to be in control.
-Lastly, read up on lucid dreams, techniques and tips. There's so much more to lucid dreaming. I always have to put-in to read about a technique (one I wish I could do more than the few times I did). It's WILD acronym of Wake Induced Lucid Dream. I've only tried a few methods so I can't speak for many of them- of course it's usually "to each their own" anyway. But, like I said, I had to mention that one because it is even better than what I've seen described. Lucidcrossroads said it best with "Don't let anyone tell you that WILDs aren't the holy grail of lucid dreaming."

Best of luck to you. I recommend lucid dreaming to everyone. =)

Ps. I included several sites about lucid dreaming. They basically say the same things with some new info here and there so whatever suits you best.

When I was kid a I got weird dreams, and they did not bother me.

Now, 50+ later, I still get "happy nightmares." For me it is as if I am a movie camera and sometimes I am an actor. Every night I get at least three or four different dreams, some comedies, some dramas, some sci-fi, adventures etc.

My neurologist told me that that is good, and never be afraid of the dreams. I feel that those dreams are much more interesting than my life these days. Before I go to sleep, I close my eyes and watch a blank screen to see the new movie.

I have the same problem. I pick up items and touch them just to feel the physical contact of them in my hands and try to tell myself "I can actually FEEL this vase (or whatever it is) in my hand, so I'm not dreaming - that means this is real." But it doesn't really help. I still know I am dreaming and I still wake up soon afterwards.
