I often hear and read that Canadians would readily move in or join the States if they could. However, after having spent five years living and working in Western Canada I wonder why a Canadian would want to be an American. Their standard of living is excellent, they have free medical care, their cities are safe, their salaries are high, and they have no racial tensions as a result of the socio-economic disparities we see in the U.S. I think that the only thing that Canadians could envy from the States is the weather in the southern states.
Which of the two countries do you think is better for the average person?

So for Repeat and NiceGuy? How do you manage to move to the States, and get as good or better job that you have in Canada?

I am one of those people who is waiting to move to the US are this is why:

Standard of living.....if I had the same salary in the US as I have in Canada, I would be living in a higher standard of living in the US. Less taxes, lower prices on many daily items allows for more money for the 'extras'.

Frre medical care.....the Great White Myth!! Medical care in Canada is not free, it costs us a fortune in taxes and extra medical coverage for what isn't covered. To top it all off, my sibling's plan at a $8/hr job in the US beats any plan I can buy in Canada and is CHEAPER (if I could find a family doctor....lost mine to retirement 10 years ago, and like 10% of Canadians haven't been able to find one accepting new patients). Free health care....LMAO!!

Cities are safe....many US cities are safe as well. Edmonton ran a murder rate higher then most cities in the US last year for part of the year because of gang violence. No matter where you go, you will see crime.

Salaries high....although we have high salaries, we also have high taxes and high prices. We need higher salaries to be able to get the same level of lifestyle that Americans can get with lower salaries.

Racial Tensions.....we have lots and many more because we do not have the melting pot. The only difference is, the US racial tensions are more historic and on a pure number scale larger then Canada's.

For me, an average hard working Western Canadian, the only solution is the US to be able to improve my lifestyle.

I have been born and raised in Canada, and have never heard that Canada would jump to join the USA. The fact of the matter is economically, Canada is doing much better, with a balanced budget and increased spending still while maintaining a higher standard of living for its people.

Canada has lower poverty, and unemployment rates. The life expectancy for both men and women is longer, and infant mortality is lower than the USA. For those who would like to trash the health care system those statistics speak for themselves, we must be doing something right.

Canada has higher standards of education, and most affordable post secondary education, which results in a higher percentage per capita of post secondary educated persons. Canad has a higher mean minimum wage, with the majority of organizations even paying beyond that.

As for the weather, Canadian weather is awesome, we have 4 glorious seasons that allow us to enjoy every sort of outdoor sport. The only things I envy about the states is for some reason their airfare is far far cheaper than in Canada.

What you just said about Canadian standard of life is completely true. I'm quite surprise to hear that a Canadian would want to go to the States. Is that really true ? Because I hear that elderly Americans can get cheap drugs by going to Canada rather than buying it at their local drugstore even if they live near the border at Mexico.

wellbeing care is not at all "loose". We pay ridiculously intense taxes which cover those prices. i'm no longer positive what the % of taxing interior the states is. yet in Canada, there's a 7%(varies) provincial and a 7% nationwide tax on each thing you purchase which grants as a lot as fourteen +/-%. per chance our approach is a recommendations extra powerful yet our wellbeing care remains definitively no longer loose. at the same time as there is not any thanks to charm to close, i'd say our equipment is extra expansive. it really is truly a count number of performance: -US: Taxes are truly low. yet once you do favor that significant operation you're whipping out some mad funds. wellbeing insurance organizations chosen who get to -stay- or -die-... straight forward and straightforward. -Canada: Taxes are REDONKIOUSLY intense. yet once you want that significant operation, it really is coated and also you get to stay. no longer trusting a wellbeing insurance employer with your life is likewise a plus!

Nice Guy has summed it up beautifully. All the other comments are all generalization from people that deep down would move to the US in a heartbeat. Seven percent federal tax on top of provincial tax? Price of items? Everyone has seen the difference on books and magazines and other products. The Peoples Republic of Canada is not the place to be. Underemployment at all time highs loose moral issues...Canadians know what I am talking about...just don't want to admit it. As far as jobs.... ask any Canadian to list five "Canadian" large companies over three thousand employed in 20 seconds or less...none of them can do it! Freedom is the ability to choose your destiny and employment. Can't do that in Canada. Don't agree? Why does the Lotto 649 (government control) use it one of it's slogans...."Imagine the freedom" referring to $....Think about it. Canadians talk about healthcare, how great it is but agree their is a shortage of MD's and Nurses...google nursing and MD jobs for any region in Canada and then do the same for any area in the USA...go on do it....there is your answer....NO JOBS in Canada!

Medical care alone would make living in Canada a desirable place to grow old & get all your meds without having to forego any other necessities.

Who provides this free medical care? Do doctors work for free? I don't believe they do, and I am certain that the equipment isn't free. There is no such thing as free medical care. In Canada, everyone pays for their medical care. They just don't see the cost. I would prefer to know the cost of my care and be able to choose such things for myself.
