This coworker has access to our companies finances and employee data (ss numbers!) and our HR department did not do a background check! The felonies are only 3 years ago.

Is it a big company? If the company did not do a background check and this person can access company financial and personnel files, I might think of switching companies. Your bosses are lunatics. Try an anonymous letter to the boss...or the head of HR....and look for another gig.

Yep, as a CPA myself Jeff, I'd say that's a pretty important background information for corporate HR and company management to be aware of. If you are not in either of those positions, you should be very careful of how you proceed in relaying this information to management if you choose to. If you are in management, you better make sure you have a very good system of internal controls in place. Sure, people can change, but old habits also die hard...

Absolutely! You can't put a person in charge of money if they've already shown that they can't be trusted with it! My parents own an assisted living center, and hired a manager who said she'd never had any convictions. They found out that in fact, she had spent time in prison for cooking the books. At first they tried to give her a second chance, and make it so that she could work there, but not handle money. But they couldn't get forget that she lied to them, and she continued to lie, so they had to get rid of her. They do background checks now.

YES! I would question the motives of your employer. Why would a business want such a liability. Any business should do a background check on everyone nowadays especially dealing with $$$ or children.

Was the fraud dealing with embezzlement? or something like an insurance claim?
