I recently caught a bad virus and couldn't remove it. I ended up giving away my computer because it wasn't worth the hassle. Should I change my I.P. address, and how do I do it? If it doesn't work, will I have problems getting back online?

A virus has NOTHING to do with an IP address
Your IP address is provided by your ISP (Internet Service Provider)

They can give you a fixed one (static) or one that changes on occassion (dynamic)
Dial-up changes everytime you log on.
Cable Modem/DSL gives you a "lease" on an IP for so long. Then depending on the ISP it renews or is changed.

Changing an IP address, unless your ISP gives you a new fixed one, will result in the loss of Internet access.

Most ISP's use dynamic IP's and your computer is set to "Obtain an IP address automatically" in the network settings.

Get a good Anti-virus program for your computer and keep it updated and don't mess with the IP setting in your computer, unless your ISP's tech support instructs you do do so.

you're ip address is dynamic every time you log on your ip is different so to change it your self log off then back on ip addresses have no bearing on weather you get viruses or not.
most viruses are relatively easy to get rid of, one on way is to boot into safe mode and run a virus scan because the virus isn't active in safe mode the anti virus program can easily remove it

This won't help. Viruses will attack any available computers regardless of IP Address.

you don't need to change your IP. Viruses really have nothing to do with that.
