It seems to be a genetic mutation. It is also more coomon in children with Down syndrome and is a marker for Downs. Some babies have no other physical problems accept having a club foot. Somewhere during development the bones develop incorrectly. It is kind of the same question as why do babies have clefts and other common deformities. I think it is truly amazing that so many babies develop without any problems when you think about how complicated development is.

My sisters little girl has bilateral club foot and she was told that it can be hereditary. The doctor said that they (my sister and her husband) can get genetic testing done to see if one of them carries the gene) but they opted against it because it wouldn't be beneficial to anyone....it would just cause guilt.

This is a genetic disorder and can be fixed with surgery. My father had it and I have a fraction of it (I had to wear a brace in my shoes for a while)..
