My mother in law in Texas has severla outdoor cats and she says they keep the snakes away. Considering where she lives, if she has no snakes I'd say there must be something to it.

This does not answer your question but perhaps you may be interested to know that where i spend my weekends on a farm in the Indian country side, there are a lot of snakes. The belief goes that the awful racket raised by guinea fowl & geese on spotting a snake ,makes them very useful in keeping away snakes.Snakes I believe do not have a hea ring mechanism ,but feel vibrations transmitted through the gound,so i cannot work out how these fowl help.

I have three cats, and have seen a couple snakes in my yard. I don't believe domestated cats are able to tackle snakes and win. A snake can strike a cat in an instant, and if the snake is poisonous, the cat will die. We also have possums, which cat shred a cat to pieces with their spike-like teeth. One of my cats is especially large, and he's no match for these type of wild creatures. Remember, cats are domesticated. They will chase string, fight other cats and run from dogs. The motion of a snake will naturally peak their interest. A cat will approach a snake, the snake will instinctively run, but when cornered (a cat will give chase), it will strike. It's not worth it if you love the pet. Cats are good for moles and other pests, but not snakes.....

Read up about snakes. They get rid of most of the vermin in your yard. They snack on bugs, mice and other rodents. They are quite beneficial and will kill and eat more mice than a tomcat. The cat will kill the mouse and leave it for you to clean up. The snake will kill the mouse and eat it.

Please don't use a cat for this, they get very sick and often die of snake bite and it's awful. If you have non-venomous snakes they will keep down rodents and small animals like moles that are damaging.

It all depends on the cat. Some will hunt, some won't.
