So you can crush them down, put the lid back on, and they take up a less space in the rubbish

the ridges symbolise the layers of rock thru which the water has been naturally filtered

it may also be aesthetically more appealing, part of marketing, strengthen shape of bottle and grip

not sure if it was volvic, but there was a bottle designed to be crushed down to save space in the recycle bin.

i have had a right good laugh at some of the other answers. they have ridges so that when they are empty you can squash them down and then put the lid on to keep them small to save space in your bin.
i thought everyone knew this?
