present your articles and who do you present them to? how much will you get paid for them? is a journalist even freelance or am i making this up

Well, although I have a home base (I work for a radio station doing afternoon news,) I also freelance sometimes. It's on a presentation basis, like you said, and it depends on whether or not they take what you present. I personally wouldn't want to depend on it for income, as it's way too fickle of a market.
