Well, unfortunately, many people feel that they are more capable of making those decisions for you. Also, since the government(taxpayers) are responsible for so much medical care, they feel justified in intruding into our lives.
If I choose to smoke a cigarette while flying down the highway with no seatbelt and I am hurt, the cost of my care shouldn't be transferred to others. I should have that right, though.
Tallboy, that is not an anarchist concept. It is a libertarian concept. As long as I am not hurting others, I should be allowed to do with my body what I choose. I own it.

I agree with you on a couple of your issues:
1) If I choose not to wear a seat belt, it should be my own risk. I think the insurance companies had a lot to do with getting this passed. They figured it would prevent death and save them money.
2)Parents should be allowed to correct children (in the right manner). If a child needs a spanking, parents should give the spanking (never a beating). I spanked with enough intensity that they thought before they misbehaved the next time.
3) Smoking......yes, smoke all you want but not where others have to inhale the smoke. There are people with serious conditions (COPD, allergies, etc), and all others have a right to a smoke free environment.
4)Eating.....eat whatever you want. I am not aware that this is regulated.

I coulden't disagree with you more on some issues, others I think are your choice.
I think Goverment, in general, sucks. I think, in general, Government is also necessary to keep pin-heads in line. Only a very few screw it up for all the rest of us, just a few.
Eat what you want, who cares, Government only suggest you eat right. Why? Its thier job and Because chances may be that you lack health insurance and when your heart takes a dump, tax-payers pay your bills including disability pay, all because you ate like a horse...where is the tax payers choice here?
Smoke outdoors, second hand smoke is bad; unless of course the lungs have a remarkable filtation system and upon exhaling the KNOWN CANCER CAUSING AGENTS ARE GONE......NOT.
How to drive, lets look at two sides of the coin, you do what you want, I do what I want, you drive stupid, I blast you with a shotgun, who's wrong here? Hey, if you say it is ok to drive as you wish why can't everyone else do as they wish, be it dangerouse or not?, you open up a huge possibility here by wishing for so much; if you wish to drive like an idiot, who pays for the death and destruction you cause? Taxpayers...agian, where is their choice on the matter?
How to raise you kids, you raise them. If you elect to starve or beat them, you loose them. If you elect to be a good parent, go to thier school functions, be a dad and not a selfish fool, then Government need not step in.
If you feel so invaded by your choices and Goverment (and I am no fan of Government) maybe you have serious issue on control and your own behavior, is this possible?
Goverment is taxpayers making choices right up front, some are good and some are not.

Freedom of speech has gone in this country I am afraid, soon you will not be able to fart without being reported for polluting the atmosphere!
With regards to your comment on seatbelts though, that is your choice, but just remember that if someone in the back seat doesnt wear a seatbelt, then they risk killing or seriously injuring the person in the front as they fly through the windscreen!

I don't thinks its so much the government telling us all what to do if people were more thoughtful to others and took into consideration what their action could play on others lives then there would be no reason for these draconian rules, and actually make the right decisions for the country. And it was the Tories who bought in the seat belt rule. the other thing is we also have to adhear to Europe now as well - instead of sitting on the side lines the UK should now embrace the EU and run it not the EU run the UK!

I think its individual choice so long as it doesn't affect other people.
What I don't understand is why smoking, seat belts, helmets etc are matters of law which are relatively unimportant issues of personal choice whilst guns and global warming which affect all of us are allowed to run rampant.
Sounds like the government is watching the wrong issues (or listening to the wrong lobbyists).

well if you haven't noticed, we are not allowed to take responsibility for our actions anymore. If you smoke you get to sue the cigarette makers. If you kill or rape someone you get to blame your upbringing. If you get a bad grade it's because the teacher doesn't like you. Personal responsibility is a thing of the past and we have accepted it. Once personal responsibility is removed the govt has the right to move in a take over. That was the plan all along. We will all be perfect little robots. We will vote for who were told to. We will allow the draft. and we will be good little citizens.

Well, I'm sure that, at the root of all of this, lies money. All of these things have financial consequences - often either the health, social or emergency services have to pick up the bill.
On the other hand, I feel exactly the same way that you do. I am also sick of having my life intruded upon but then I consider myself to be an educated, intelligent person who is well-equipped to make my own decisions. Unfortunately, if you go out for a walk you will see that people like me are somewhat in the minority, and that most people probably NEED to be told how to live their lives.

It wouldn't be so bad if the parasites could govern but this country is now among the dregs of Europe ..a free for all run down 53rd state and all thanks to our GOVERNment and this debt ridden wimpish society who are only interested in their own ends and outdoing the Jones's .
Just where did this wimpish shemale society come from?? God only made ten commandments, Blair and Co' have a million.

Actually, I do think.
You cite "how to drive, how not to drive". Would you rather have a free for all rammy on the roads? If you drive dangerously, then you run the risk of injuring people other than yourself.
As for the eating/smoking matter...given we have (in the UK at least) the NHS, the Govt has some duty of care regarding our health, given it is responsible for the running of the health service.
However, if you want to be a chain smoking, burger guzzling, 34 stone dangerous driver surrounded by illiterate and equally fat children, f\-/ck off and pay for your own healthcare after you crash on your own private car track.
