Airlines have become smart in the face of competition. They sell the same product at different prices. And there are buyers too!!!!!!!!
It is high time for consumer awareness among us to strike the best deals. A little home work can make a lot of difference.

There can be several reasons:
If the plane is filling up quick, they will start to charge more, if it is not filling up they will charge less because even a $50 seat is better than an empty seat.
Where you bought it, if you know where to look online you can get a cheaper ticket, if you book through the airline online you can get a cheaper ticket than any non-internet way. Does anyone still do this?
There are actually sub-classes within economy, often referred to Y and Q class. This goes hand-in-hand with the discount websites. Y class seats are usually more expensive because they are sold first. Q class seats are sold on flights that are usually not full, these are discounted seats to try and fill the plane. Again, it is better to sell a seat cheap than fly an empty seat.

That is just smart business - selective pricing allows you to charge close to the maximum amount a person is willing to pay.
The other reason is simply that the marginal cost of an added passenger is negligible but the added revenue is not and so it is better to fill a $300 seat for $150 than to let it stay empty, thus the deals that appear last-minute.
(There are far more fixed costs for airlines than variable costs - namely landing fees, fuel cost, staff wages, even if the plane is empty you have to pay all those)
