Why not someplace exotic like Kenya, or Congo? Or, if you want something more developed, how about Japan (if you're not japanese), or Italy?

Backpacking through Europe is overdone. Why not backpack through South America? It's sure to be cheaper, and a lot of cities in Argentina and Brazil have a European feel with a Latin flair. Or, I've seen trips where you can work on a ranch in Australia for a few months. That would be a different experience that many colleges would love their incoming students to have.

I bet if you found a volunteer program abroad for a few weeks, many people would be more likely to help you fund your travels. You can take a few weeks before or after to travel around the area, but you can truly experience part of the culture while volunteering.

Your parents are footing the bill for a trip to wherever? Will they adopt me???

Hmm...seriously though...we've been discusisng honeymoon destinations and thinking of both Italy and Australia...a friend of mine did a solo trip to Australia I think like 2 or 3 years ago and absolutely loved it (he's a bit on the outdoorsy side). A former co-worker went to Argentina a couple of years ago and she had a wonderful time.

Backpack through Europe. Visit plenty of countries. Do you remember the season of Road Rules (MTV) when they did semester at sea? See if the school you are going to offers that program and if they do take that. 2 birds-1stone
