because this is a capitalistic society, and all the money making machinies want is to make more money. . .
if they only looked at it long term, they would realize if they made college education free, or even cheaper, so that the poor intelligent people can get through, then they would make more money. . .

I could go all obvious on you and say that they have to pay the teachers, build the buildings, heat and light the buildings, and even buy things like chalk and toilet paper. What I really want to say is that college is worth everything that it costs you. If it were free, most people would not value it, everyone would think that they automatically deserved it, and the quality of the experiance would diminish as it was diluted to meet everyone's expectations and needs. I was horrified to see students who got scholarships and grants, wasting their opportunity to get that education. They were most often the ones partying and barely showing up for classes (yes there were scholarship students who treasured that experiance and there were people who had to pay and wasted the opportunity anyway, but I am speaking in general of course)
Eventually College may become part of the public education system, and everyone may actually be required to attend like they do K - 12. This will generally extend the time children get to grow up and become adults. Some will love it and some will cry foul. All I can say is, be careful what you ask for, you might get it!

um,,, OK, I was a college teacher for 40 years. I had a family and a house with a mortgage. I am smart and was a good teacher. Are you saying that I should have worked for free? That smart, capable people like me should work for free? I don't really see that happening any time soon.
So, someone has to pay the costs for faculty, buildings lab equipment, sports facilities, etc.. And what about the construction workers who build those things, or the maintenance people who take care of them - are they supposed to work for free?
It costs from $25,000 to $74,000 a year to provide a college education - in public universities most of the cost is carried by tax payers. In private universities it must be paid by tuition, endowment earnings, alumni gifts and research grants. The small fraction of the cost that students actually pay is a bargain!

well for one, it cost money to run a school and the second is greed, some states provide free classes for residents, such as flordia and cali. A college education is greatly overpriced and there is nothing better than apprenticeship on the job programs to teach the real crap.... This would ruin the State of Higher education if more companies used this type of service.. Sure it is not for every profession. It would weed out the flunkies and put people who want to work and who are capable in positions they deserve.. But hey, that makes too much scense.

The nerve of all of those professors and staff members demanding to be paid.
Its funny how education & medicine are similar in that the costs in both rise much higher than inflation. What else is similar? Oh yeah the Govt is trying to make both education and medical care "free".

If UK based then it is. The Govt has stated that it will pay for all training for under 24s upto, but not including degree level.
If you are after vocational, then you will probably have to accept a framework apprenticeship.
If you are under 24, working ft and not looking at vocational, then you will probably have to pay.

Nothing comes free. How would you attract good teachers? How would you carry out good research? And have facilities?
Nothing is free. It would have to come out of higher taxes.

Why should it be free?
College is NOT a right, it is a privilege.
