I did this experiment myself. I think diet coke worked the best. Furthermore, the original Mentos also seemed to work the best. The mentos contains an ingredient that changes the surface tension of the liquid. It allos 99.99% of the carbon dioxide to escape from the liquid almost instantly.
I drilled a hole in a bottle cap, used some tack adhesive to stick the Mentos to the underside of the cap. Carefully threaded the cap back on, then used a chopstick to push the Mentos down into the diet coke. STAND BACK!!! My two young sons thought it was the coolest thing they had seen in the last 30 minutes.

Colas, such as diet pepsi and diet coke, work best.
Some idiot drank a 2-L bottle of diet coke and then swallowed a whole pack of mentos. He puked everywhere for about 5 minutes solid and passed out. He almost died. Funny video.
