It might sound crazy, but if you place the hard drive in a freezer, you might be able to hook it back up to the computer long enough to salvage your important data.

Assuming you're using IDE-type hard drives, and not SATA, here's what you do.

You'll have to get a new hard drive and install your operating system on it, first. Turn it off, then get your frozen hard drive. Set the frozen hard drive to "slave", then hook it up to the same IDE cable as the master. (You could also hook it up to the secondary IDE channel, if it's free).

Turn the computer on, and as soon as your operating system (probably Windows) loads, check to see if your old hard drive appears (in Windows, open My Computer). If you see a new hard drive installed, that's probably it.

Immediately start copying the most important data from your old hard drive to your new one. Just drag and drop folders right onto your desktop--you can organize them later.

Eventually, your hard drive will fail again. Shut down, disconnect it, and freeze it again. Eventually, it will stop working altogether, but hopefully you'll be lucky and get all of your data off, first.

You have to replace the hard drive. You can have the data on the disk recovered by a data recovery service, but that's expensive.
