I think its bcoz they need acceptance from the society. They want love, respect and other things which they cant achieve if they show their true colours or may be they think they will lose the one they love thats d reason they pretend that way.
to be honest even I pretend to be what I am not but I do this bcoz I dnt want to lose the people I love, but ya this doesnt harm them in any way.

Good question but hard to answer coz people will not admit it coz they want to please the people around them so inorder to achieve their goal, they have to look good and pretend their bad manners turn to good manners for a while and then when you get to know them better then the real COLOR will come out and then you will be sorry why you are with them. But anyway, nobody is perfect. I presumed you just don't take that seriously as i thought about it. i myself pretend at times and you tell me if no one else is!. I totally agree with you that people do pretend to be so nice at times and that's very intense and disturbing coz FAKE is hard to distinguish at times, just watch out whom you are dealing with.

I don't think everybody does... What a strange question, do you pretend be a person you're not?

i think there are alot if honest people out there, but they dont get as much attention as the liars do- clearly because people lie to get attention.
Also i think websites like "facebook" "bebo" and "myspace" make people feel that they have to have the wittyest remarks, the coolest pictures, the most friends... so they lie to compete...
I dont pretend to be anything- if im grumpy, i'l be grumpy and if i'm happy i'll dance naked, and its taken me a long time to accept that i dont have to out on a happy front the whole time.

Not everyone does, but some people pretend so they are liked or fit in, sometimes it is a confidence problem.

One of the great philosophical questions of life.
If EVERYONE pretended that they were someone that they are not then everyone would be someone else and no one would be who they are.
If everyone were to pretend that they are another living person but no one could "take up" a person who has been "taken up" by someone else then everyone would be taken up by someone and things would be back to normal again.
Discuss!

People put on a lot of different masks, so no one will see the real them. A lot of people do this to cover up the internal agony that is going on with in them. We are programmed right from the get go of coming out of our mother's womb, with a lot of negatives through a life time. We look to others for approval and in relationships we marry someone because they will solve that need within us. That is a big mistake, we are all human and we are going to be continually disappointed in looking to others for happiness. Once you learn to love yourself, through counseling, self help books and their are lots out there or through pain full life experiences. You will look at those around you in a different way and yourself. You know, God did not make junk. We need to really love ourselves, it is not vanity. Only than can we look at others and see around the hurt that they cause us, and know that it is not about us, but about, the hurt with in them. Remember, we all have a choice to accept pain or not, that others cause us. Personally, I have gone through some hurtful things in my life and truly have value of me and have gotten to know me for the first time in my life. I don't feel bad anymore!!!

I don't pretend to be who I'm not, I am bi whether or not you like it. People just happen to prefer one gender to another sometimes, and that's how they were born. They should have every right to be together, or marry.

Not everyone does, but those who do generally have issues going on and try to fake it out by making themselves be somebody they really aren't. I admit I have done it myself, and it was wrong for me to do, I wanted people to like me but I learned the hard way people will like me regardless if I was broke or rich! I think it's due to lack of self worth, trust and low self esteem.
