I saw an episode of Independent Lens on PBS recently. It was on Rap Music (which I'm not a fan of). However, it posed an interesting idea as it relates to rappers and the mindset that you have to be "hard" to the world in order to be taken seriously, in order to be taken as a man.
That made me wonder, what do other cultures think "being a man" is? What do I think? What do you fine people on YA think? Does society value certain traits that you don't?
Tell me YA, What makes a man?

I'm not here to debate the whole Thug/Gangsta/Rapper lifestyle. I disagreed with what these young rappers were saying made a man, so I thought I would ask you what you thought made a man. So please, stay on topic.

Matt: There's a difference between a "guy" and a "man". You are obviously a "guy".

Take hard people seriously? I don't think so. They live a life deliberately reduced by the feeling and imposition of fear. Maybe this is why 'hard men' have ho's instead of girlfriends and wives - too reduced to handle a real relationship. Acting hard only forces people to react to what you do, instead of allowing them to respond to who you are.
Being a man means not being afraid to open up to new experiences, having the self determination to finish what you start tempered with the sense to know if it can be done........... I think maybe the qualities for being a man are the same as for being a person.

Besides that obvious physical attributes a man is whatever he decided to be. Of course depending on who you talk to the criteria of what a man should be changes.
The rap world is still based on gangsterism. Of course being "hard" is the only way to be taken seriously. It is a world built on brute force to create fear to intimidate others. I view the rap world as men stuck in prison mentality.

A real man isn't above working anywhere to earn a living. A real man takes care of his family if he has one. A real man dances with his woman in the kitchen, and doesn't mind helping with the dishes.

Hip Hop Culture has nothing of value to offer. It has no coherent or workable concept of what a man, or a woman, is.
Kipling, of Imperial British culture, had a far clearer sense of manhood.

Genetically speaking it's down to the chromosomes. Physically speaking it's down to the genitalia. Emotionally speaking - well, who can say?
However, being 'hard' doesn't make you a man; it makes you a thug.

Standing up for truth, and right....being willing to go "the extra mile"....doing what you say you will do.....treating people with dignity, and respect.....telling the truth, even when it hurts.... being fair.....treating people the way you want to be treated.....all these things "make a man."

and how he deals with his emotion, a guy has 1 emotion, im not sure if you can even call it an emotion but a guy is permanantly set on horny. no matter where he is or how ugly the girl is he will always do her, so to answer ur question the ability to resist sex makes a man!
