My Belgian ancestors were farmers in southwestern Minnesota. Because they had a belief against debt, they owned all their land outright so when the Great Depression hit and other farmers lost their lands to foreclosure, my grandfather had the money to buy all this foreclosed land making him one of the largest landholders in the area. He grew mostly corn, small grains and hay as well as raised cattle and horses.

Nearly everyone alive today is the descendent of farmers if you go back far enough. Simply go back 300 years and roughly 90 % of Europeans were farmers. Recently yes, my grandpa farmed and raised cows, steers, corn and other grains. My other family side stopped farming a generation earlier, but yes they did, and some of my family still farms.
