This question (in it's various re-incarnations) remains a yummy one to answer. Good one, Innocentia!
I know, we all say it, but how can biltong not be at the top of the list? It's just sooooooo GOOD! Droeewors too.
Being a boytjie from the Cape, waterblommetjie(pondweed)-bredie with mutton is also a drooler.
I'm a sucker for the sweets, so waatlemoenstukke-konfyt, apricot jam, greenfig preserve and koeksisters is definitely on the list.
Then that absolute rarity outside the borders of southern Africa: beskuit. Dipped in rooibos tea, of course.
A good braai is always a firm favourite (almost more a cultural ritual than a dish): skaaptjops, wors, potbrood (with that apricot jam) and a lekka potato-mayo salad. In the Cape we also like to braai harders and snoek.
I like my pap as a breakfast porridge with some butter and brown sugar. Also like Maltabella or Weetbix for breakfast, but the king of em all is PRONUTRO!
Salt and vinegar slaptjips with a sausage roll or peppersteak pie have always been a prize. When I was a kid, my dad would sometimes drive us to the roadhouse in our old VW Variant station wagon for some slaptjips and pies. What a treat it was!
Dunno if drinks fall under this category, but I like to have most of my SA food with a cold Amstel or a good South African Cabernet or Pinotage.
And of course, as all expats can vouch, all this tastes so much better when had IN South Africa!
