I have lived in SW Houston most of my life and in my opinion the deeper you go into the SW, the more ghetto it will get. Bellaire, TX is a nice town located near 610 and 59. The area is full of nice homes but most of them are pricey. Just west of Bellaire is the Gulfton area. I live in a small neighborhood near Gulton. Yes the area is ghetto but its fixing its problem. Many old apartments are being torned down and new shopping centers are being put up. The thing I like most about Gulton is that it is only 5 minutes from the Galleria. South to Bellaire is Meyerland another nice neighborhood. Many Jews live in that neighborhood and the homes there are still kind of expensive but a lot cheaper than Bellaire. If you continue going west from Bellaire, TX, you will run into Sharpstown. From what I've read and heard, Sharpstown used to be a nice neighborhood back in the day. Nowadays the same cannot be said. The homes in that neighborhood are cheap and most of them are ugly! There are a lot of Hispanic families living in that area as well as in the Gulton area. There are also a good amount of Blacks and Asians. Another neighborhood I am familiar with is Alief. Most of my family lives in Alief and it is also ghetto. Alief has a bit of everything in regards to who live there. There are some neighborhoods being built but they are those weak KB Homes neighborhoods where all the houses look the same. Now the most dangerous and ghetto part of the SW, in my opinion, is the Fondren area. I have personally not live there but I make sure to stay clear of that area. Now those are some neighborhoods of the city. The suburbs, like Sugarland, are much nicer and are not ghetto.

I lived in a neighborhood off 59 and it was a good place, but if you went a street or two over it wasn't. Sharpstown Mall used to be a great place to go, but it did get rough. I wouldn't go there by myself at night. The place is getting better and I am happy about that. I hate to see a neighborhood go down for any reason. To Mizzhollywood, why would anyone want their city to be tough? Come on, most people would want their city to be known as a nice place to live. I was born and raised in Houston and never tried to say it was anything less than what it is. A great city that can be a little rough around the edges, but then again what city doesn't have some bad parts to it. That is not what I want to focus on and you should try to find some good in the city you live in instead of always trashing it. I know you are not from here and maybe you are just bitter about having to move away from your hometown, but that is not the fault of Houston or any of the great people that live here.

I can tell you the worst neighborhoods in Southwest Houston.
Gulfton (aka the Gulfton Ghetto)
Alief
Beechnut and Bissonett between the beltway and the loop. This area, predominantly zip code 77036, has been a hole since the 80s. I used to work there, and our office building had a fenced in parking lot and armed guards (I used to carry my Browning in my briefcase, too).
Parts of Westchase have gone to the dogs. I wouldn't move back.
Parts of Sharpstown.
On the other hand, Bellaire (especially the City of Bellaire, not just the street) is still nice.
Parts of Richmond west of the "Richmond Strip" area, east of Gessner, still have nice neighborhoods.
Just west of the Galleria.
That's about it for HOUSTON. There might be little pockets of good neighborhoods in there as well, but I couldn't tell you every one. There are suburbs of southwest Houston that are nice (Sugarland, for example) but that isn't what you asked.

You do not want to live anywhere near the Sharpstown area or in Meyerland. Avoid the Fondren and Alief areas like the plague. Bellaire is a very nice area in which to live as is West University. Excellent schools and both are cities within a city, which means they have their own fire and police depts. Avoid both sides of I -59 South... near Gessner.

The beechnut and bissonett area are HORRIBLE ... it is nasty, ronchy, and full of crime and hate. Also, I wouldn't go near Bellaire, that place is not that great either ... Nor would I go near Stafford ... just stay away from any neighborhoods that are between the Loop and Highway 6
