It's hard for me to narrow it down to just one. I loved Gone With the Wind because it was so compelling I couldn't put it down the first time I read it. The Stand by Stephen King because it could really happen and scared me. Every time someone coughed I thought Captain Trips. Almost anything by Nora Roberts because they're entertaining. Linda Howard when I'm in the mood for a good mystery. I could go on to my favorites in all the genres but I won't. Oh Tami Hoag's triology was good too.

'The Wind Up Bird Chronicle' by Haruki Murakami. It's unlike anything else I have ever read, it's clever but easy to read, poetic addictive, bizarre and fantastical but not sci-fi. It just explores all those questions that you think about sometimes and turns them into possibilities.
Like - did you ever dream about someone and feel embarassed when you saw them 'cause you felt like they knew? He takes that idea and makes it something soooo beautiful. It how words are meant to be used.
It's the type of writing that writers envy.

Wilbur Smith - Power of the Sword and Rage.
I love the way he portrays the characters, you get a feeling that you know all of them personally and I also enjoy the background apartheid politics that he uses as the books themes.

"The Coldest Winter Ever" by Sista Soulja
It is awesome how she illustrated tragic hood stories while embracing her ability as a great writer. She reminds me of Zora Neal Hurston who wrote a lot of her story in slavery slang, but the narrator voice was so intelligent...
