It was the swearing in of JFK as President of the United Stat res. Robert Frost, the famous American poet, spoke at the inauguration reading a poem he had written for the occasion. A bit of trivia: As frost was reading, the lectern began to burn from an electrical fire. It was pathetic to see the great Frost at 80 years of age befuddled as to whether or not to continue reading. The fire was quickly put out, and Frost completed his reading.

I personally witnessed this.

JFK was sworn in (inaugurated) as this country's 35th president on January 20, 1961. January 20 is the scheduled date for the swearing in of a new president, every four years (it used to be March 4, but was changed about 70 years ago). The next swearing in (and the beginning of a new four-year term) is scheduled for January 20, 2009. Whoever is elected in November 2008 will be inaugurated then.

JFK was assassinated on November 22, 1963, and did not serve a full term. His vice president, Lyndon Johnson, took over as president upon Kennedy's death.

JFK's inaugural speech is very famous and inspiring:

Robert Frost spoke at his inauguration:

Apparently, Frost couldn't read the poem he wrote for the occasion (he was old and the sun was too bright), so he ended up reading another of his poems, from memory:

PS I like history! I learned something too! I visited the JFK library and museum when I was in Boston.

Robert Frost. He had first idea to study a particular poem for the president observed as "dedication," yet at the same time as the mirrored image off of the snow became too vibrant to study it, he recited "The present Outright" by memory.
