I am using a midwife for this pregnancy and find her methods a bit unorthodox. Are midwives supposed to perform similar duties aside from what a regular OB/GYN would do? Is she not supposed to send you for exams and tests? She told me even if my water brakes, I should stay home and wait until the contractions are 5 minutes or less. A lot of people I spoke to say that once the water brakes I should go to the Hospital right away, chances of infection are great at that point. I just need some advice on what I really should expect from this midwife. This is my third pregnancy, my first the baby died and after I had a c-section with my daughter, I am due now with my son, on May 1st. I want a natural delivery but I am scared at how casual she is about everything.

She was recommended by my OB/GYN Doctor, he is no longer making deliveries and suggested I use a midwife.

Midwifes take everything seriously, they just don't medicalise the whole thing as much as doctors.
The reason you are scared she is being casual is because you had a doctor before and he led you to believe that terrible things would happen if you didn't have trillions of tests, and if your waters break you should be immediately laid on your back in a sterile environment.
Doctors go over the top, there is really no need for all this medicalisation. Nothing awful is going to happen if you walk around with broken waters as long as you have clean underwear on and change your pad frequently, and labour starts within 96 hours. Having loads of tests is not going to make your baby any healthier
I much prefer midwifers everything is calm and relaxed, just as it should be, after all you are having a baby, you are not ill!
Good luck

First and foremost do you like you midwife..do you trust her? If not you may want an other.

Most midwifes/midwives are taught and from experience to be laxed. They want things to be laxed for you to. If you want a test you need to speak to her about it. What ever fear you have she is there to relax and ease your mind.

As for the water breaking it is OK if it is clear to stay home till the contractions are 5 minutes apart. As long as it is clear amniotic fluid. You will be having the baby with in 24 hours. If not you will go in the next morning for a exam. You will not be able to have a bath after the bag breaks. So her fear of infection is low because she will tell you what to do.

Hope this helps hun. And congrats

I live in Norway and I have 3 kids. That is the way we do it here in Norway. Here most of the births is with a midwife. There is a doctor stand bye in case of a emergency. Most women call the hospital when the water brake, but usually we don't go to the hospital until about the same time as your midwife is talking about.

If you are going to the hospital anyway, why dont you get a doula instead? A doula is there for emotional support and knows how to calm down a screaming pregnant woman. The hospitals also like doulas because if you have one, you are less likely to get a C-section. The hospital should have lists of ones they would refer.

The people that I know, that have had midwives usually are trying to deliver at home.

This seems odd to me. How did you find this midwife? Did a friend suggest her or did you look for her in the yellow pages. Call your last obgyn and ask for a referral. Im sure they can give you one. Best wishes and congrats!
