No you are not wrong it is the approach you used. Blowing up and screaming is exactly what he wants. He likes to get into these battles and you are helping him. You have to make a decision and then do it. This has probably been a pattern and now you need to change it.
Ask him to sit down, you stand nearby so that you can look him in the face. Now looking at him you tell him in a soft voice that you do not appreciate the way he treats you, you do not like the verbal abuse and he has a choice. Stop or you are gone. DO NOT RAISE YOUR VOICE he will try to make you mad. Then tell him he has a lot to think about and leave. be prepared: jacket purse car keys and a place to go all by the door and get them on the way out. His is the next move. If he goes out to get a beer with friends he doesn't really care He will try to call you but do not take the call. This really works if you hold in there.

I believe once you've reached the point of yelling, then scolding, and finally threatening, it's probably time to leave.

If you make threats and don't follow through, then your bluff has just been called and you will no longer have any ground to stand on. Plus, why would you want to continue to live in such a frustrating situation?

It sounds like you've tried your best, and that didn't work. Leave and find someone who is more compatable, and worthy of you.

Good luck.

Is there something wrong with walking away from a person that treats you badly?

If this person responds to negative reinforcement, aren't you simply rewarding bad behavior when you do what is expected?

Live well~

You should never get to the persons level. I can imagine that at the moment you must have been very mad and fed up with the situation, but that kind of reaction never solves the problem.
