In Colonial times, the pastors had incredible power. Fleeing from religious persecution in Europe, The puritans came to this country and set up little theocracies where the church, and specifically the pastors, wielded incredible power. The Mathers were a family of pastors. You might want to look up any one of them (Cotton, Increase)and get a ton of information about the pastors of the day. Also, THE CRUCIBLE is a play the also demonstrates the power of the pastors. Good luck.
